Born and raised in Luxembourg, Alice spent her career at the European Community inner sanctum, eventually serving as Administrative Assistant to Pascal Lamy, Directeur de Cabinet (equivalent to our “Chief of Staff”) to the President of the Commission of the European Communities, Jacques Delors.
As such, she spent 15 years at the center of government in Brussels and had the opportunity to meet most of the major political figures of the time, to fly on Air Force One, be a guest at a formal dinner at Buckingham Palace, and, generally, work around the clock at the white hot center of activity during the formative years of the European Community.
When we were married in 1996 she requested a transfer to New York and became the Attaché in charge of the administrative side (as opposed to the diplomatic side) of the European Community Mission to the United Nations.
The single most important aspect of this, from my point of view, was that we got to have diplomatic license plates on our car in New York City.
